Is it Worth the Value...Vetting a Newborn Care Specialist

Updated: May 23, 2024

Newborn Care has been previously deemed a luxury service. However, it truly is a service that should be afforded to all because there are benefits for every family. Those benefits can include educational information to parents that are building blocks to healthy habits for newborns, parents being able to rest and recover, and more harmonious connections within family structures to name a few. In the wake of parents becoming aware that specialized private duty services for newborns are available we are seeing a couple of interesting trends. Some of the trends are the legislative conversations being had to discuss how important postpartum care is to the wellness of mothers and their babies, insurance entities are starting to pay the cost for the services and being that this field is not federally regulated some workers are starting to be attracted to the benefits that come alone from securing a position with families needing the service of a provider.

There is a general marketing standard that is charge in the postpartum field. Upon interviewing providers to work for your family understand the rate you are being proposed. Take into consideration does the value meet the amount and if it is extremely low has that person verbalized why they are charging that rate? Does that person seem genuine? Ask yourself how you feel about it. Cheaper is not always better.... sometimes paying a cheaper price in the beginning leads to a more expensive price tag in the end, so know what you are paying for.

When it comes to vetting a newborn care specialist, there are several steps you can take to ensure you’re hiring a qualified and trustworthy professional. Here are some recommendations:

  1. Interview in Person: Whenever possible, meet with potential candidates in person. Create a list of questions to ask during the interview to assess their knowledge, experience, and approach to newborn care1.

  2. Letters of Recommendation: Request letters of recommendation from previous clients or employers. These can provide insights into the specialist’s work ethic, reliability, and skills.

  3. References: Ask for references from past clients. Be sure to contact these references to inquire about their experience with the specialist. Hearing firsthand accounts can help you make an informed decision.

  4. Online Reviews: Look for online reviews or testimonials related to the specialist. Check platforms like Google, Yelp, or specialized caregiver websites to see what others have said about their services.

  5. Background Check: Request a background check to verify the specialist’s history. This step ensures that there are no red flags or concerning incidents in their past.

  6. Infant CPR Certification: Ensure that the specialist has a valid infant CPR certification. This is crucial for handling emergencies and ensuring the safety of your newborn.

  7. Professional Certifications: Ask for copies of any other professional certifications the specialist holds. For example, certifications related to newborn care or early childhood development.

Remember that not all newborn care specialist knowledge base is equal, so it’s essential to verify their credentials/ experience so consider hiring someone who has you have thoroughly checked their background. Good luck in finding the right specialist for your newborn! 🌟
