What is Pace Feeding? When to Use It and How for Newborns

Pace feeding is a method of bottle feeding that is designed to closely mimic the natural rhythm and process of breastfeeding. This feeding technique is especially beneficial for newborns, as it allows them to control the flow of milk, taking in food at a pace that suits them, and preventing overeating. The practice includes feeding the baby in a more upright position and holding the bottle horizontally to slow down the flow of milk. This not just simulates the breastfeeding experience but also significantly reduces the risk of common feeding problems such as gas, reflux, and the potential for overfeeding.

New parents might wonder when the best time to use pace feeding is. It’s particularly useful for families who are combining breastfeeding with bottle feeding. Pace feeding can help prevent nipple confusion, making it easier for babies to switch between breast and bottle. This method is also invaluable for infants who gulp their food too quickly or those who suffer from frequent gas or reflux, as it allows them to eat more slowly and digest their food better.

Implementing pace feeding involves a few simple steps:

  1. Hold your baby in an upright position, supporting their head and neck.

  2. Tip the bottle so that it fills the nipple with milk. This prevents your baby from swallowing air.

  3. Touch the nipple to your baby's lips and, once your baby opens their mouth, gently insert the nipple.

  4. Hold the bottle horizontally to slow the milk's flow, allowing your baby to pause and breathe as needed.

  5. Follow your baby's cues. If they seem to want a break, tip the bottle down so they can rest before continuing.

Pace feeding is more than just a technique; it’s a way to enhance the bonding experience between parents and their newborn. It encourages attentiveness to the baby's hunger cues and promotes a relaxed feeding environment, ensuring both the baby and the parents are comfortable and stress-free during meal times.
